View and update supporter contact preferences

Maintaining an accurate account of, and respecting, supporter contact preferences, is an important part of complying with privacy and consent requirements in many countries, and is facilitated by SupporterBase. This article explains:

  • Who can view user contact preferences, and how;
  • How supporters can update their own contact preferences for each group they belong to.

Viewing supporter contact preferences

All users (admins, captains and vice-captains) can see the contact preferences of supporters displayed on each supporter’s individual profile.

  • For example, if a supporter has asked to not be contacted by email, phone call or SMS, those contact options will be “greyed out” at the top of their profile.
  • Please note, some contact options may also be greyed simply because there are not valid contact details for that supporter. If they are added later, and the supporter has not specifically opted out of that form of contact, you will be able to contact them using that method.
  • Additionally, admins and captains can see a consolidated list of all supporters that have specific contact preferences applied. This can be viewed by clicking on View Supporter Contact Preferences on your main group page. You should see a list of all supporters, with ticks or crosses indicating the contact preferences for each supporter that has opted out of a particular form of contact.

Updating supporter contact preferences

Using NationBuilder contact preferences

Admins can determine whether they would like SupporterBase to honour all existing contact preferences from NationBuilder (under Settings > Configurations). If that configuration is not enabled, supporters will be contactable via your group by default.

By allowing the supporter to update their own preferences

Supporters can update their contact preferences for your SupporterBase group, via your SupporterBase's unsubscribe page (ie"YOURSUPPORTERBASESLUG.supporterbase.com/unsubscribe".

  • Once there, supporters can identify themselves by their email address, select the appropriate supporter group, and nominate which forms of contact they do not which to receive (ie SMS, email, phone call), or unsubscribe completely.
  • Please note any SupporterBase group page that has a “hidden” status will not appear in that list of options on the public unsubscribe page. However, groups with the “unlisted” status will still appear, so you will just have to set the status of each group accordingly.

Directly via the SupporterBase interface

Group leaders can update supporter contact preferences via the supporter's profile on the main group page (using the link directly under their name), or from within SMS and email threads.

Important note

Contact preferences are manageed on a per-group basis. This is because some supporters may wish to opt out of communications from a particular group but not from all organisational communication. As such, supporters that wish to stop receiving all communications from your orgnisation will need to be unsubscribed from every SupporterBase group they belong to individually, as well be marked as unsubscribed in NationBuilder.
